NEW SHIPS FOR VIKING RIVER CRUISES

Viking River Cruises’ plans for 2012 have gotten even more ambitious with the addition of two more ships on top of the four new ships previously announced.

The cruise line says it’s seeing unprecedented interest in the new vessels, which led it to accelerate plans for the extra two ships. Although they will sail rivers, their designs are inspired by ocean ship trends, such as balconies.

Like the other new builds, these Viking Longships will include several innovations for European river cruising, including the biggest suites in the region. Each ship will have two 445-square-foot suites with separate living room, bedroom, bathroom and private wrap-around balcony. The vessels also will feature all-weather indoor/outdoor terraces at their fronts with retractable floor-to-ceiling glass doors. In addition, they’ll have al fresco dining areas with grills on the upper deck, adjacent to the lounge

NINE MORE US CITIES APPROVED BY CUBA

Nine more US cities approved by Cuba

CHARTERS to Cuba from an additional nine US cities have been given approval by the Cuban authorities, according to a Reuters report.
Cuban travel agency, Havanatur Celimar, which has exclusive rights on the Cuban end of US charter flights, has indicated that it has added charter flights from Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Baltimore, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas, Houston and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Havanatur Celimar already has rights on flights from Miami, New York and Los Angeles.

Cuba is preparing for an increase in visitors from the US following the recent easing of travel restrictions by the Obama administration.
The US, which maintains comprehensive sanctions on the communist-run island and bans tourism to Cuba, does not allow regular commercial flights between the two countries. However, the Obama administration has lifted all restrictions on Cuban Americans visiting their homeland and allowed religious, academic and other professional travel by Americans to Cuba.
